When Ultimate Fan Fights opened with Batman vs. Captain America the bar was raised pretty high. You could tell that months, if not years, of thoughts and planning went into the production. The lighting was perfect, the costumes solid, the action fluid and consistent. UFF 2 piled on more live action gaming greatness when Scorpion of Mortal Kombat faced off with Ryu of Street Fighter. It was gritty and raw. Something that most fans had fallen in love with. It felt real. It wasn’t without flaws, but it was solid nonetheless. You would be hard pressed to find something comparable on the web.

Then, UFF 3 hit the web and almost immediately was put to the flames by fanboys and, unfortunately, discrimination around the world. You can read my review of UFF 3 here. In short, the producers of the series got off track from what their audience was hungry for. Enter episode 4, a colossal improvement over UFF 3. Quite frankly, real environments serve this series best. I’m not negating all the hard work put into UFF 3. It comes down to your audience and tapping into what drew them in originally. As they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

In UFF 4 we see Metal Gear’s Snake battling it out with Assassin Creed’s Ezio. It’s thrilling, fast paced and most importantly, feels real. The fun change this time around is that it’s not an arena style match-up. It’s a foot battle with some stealth thrown into the mix. You follow both as they leap frog from rooftops and battle it out with Snake’s and Ezio’s trademark weaponry.

Episode 4 puts the series back on track. There’s a few holes here and there and the two endings aren’t equal to each other in visual weight, but overall this is some fantastic indie work. Check it out and follow UFF creators Yung Lee (GakAttack) and James Mark (Team2X). According to the official GakAttack Facebook page, this will be Lee’s last UFF effort. The news comes as a shock but I know for the true fans Yung will continue to receive the same, if not more, support he’s received these past few years. I look forward to his future work and crossing paths one day.
